Hi! Welcome to ChristianRoots Canada

Sons of Issachar Do you know anything about the 'Sons of Issachar '? 1 Chronicles 12:32 recounts the people who came to Hebron to crown David as King. From the tribe of Issachar, 200 chiefs came. They were described as 'men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do.' In Esther Chapter 1, the king consulted with 'wise men who knew the times.' He conferred with 'experts in law and justice.' I am not sure what to make of some of the changes happening in Canadian history before our...

We all read emails and then rush on with our lives. We intend to sign up for things, but we forget. I get it. We have competing demands on our time and interests. But I wanted to give you another opportunity to join me on Zoom for a very interesting story about Sir Joseph Flavelle. A rags-to-riches story. He was one of the many millionaire Methodists. His meatpacking business lives on in Maple Leaf Foods. We are doing a series on the Christian Millionaires of Toronto, who left important...

Thanksgiving & Praise O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever. Psalm 107:1. This time last year, I was recovering from a mild stroke which had happened at the beginning of September. That stroke came at the tail end of seven months of excruciating pain. That was a scary experience for the whole family. But in the midst of it all, I had much to be thankful for. In God's providence, we had moved to our current home just two months before the stroke. At...

Let's Start With Reconciliation What does it mean to reconcile? According to the Oxford Dictionary, it means finding solutions to opposing ideas or needs. With people, it means bringing opponents into harmony so their relationships are restored. To understand this concept, we can examine a case study of our first parents of the human race, Adam and Eve. This is by no means an exhaustive treatise on the subject, but it draws parallels. God had given Adam and Eve a perfect world, with perfect...

The Millionaires of Toronto The photos above are of Sir Joseph Wesley Flavelle and Senator George Albertus Cox, courtesy of Wikipedia. Over the last three years, I have been learning about Toronto's Christian millionaires. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Sherbourne Street Methodist Church in Toronto was known as 'The Millionaires' Church'. This was because many wealthy businessmen were members. I'm just starting to do a deep dive into this research, and I'm blown away by what I've...

Christian Millionaires What would you say if I told you that: The University of Toronto is a federation of Methodist, Anglican and Catholic universities? These three independent institutions have retained their legal status as universities. Read the scoop here when you scroll right down to 'Colleges'. The Toronto Hospital bears a plaque honouring Sir Joseph Flavelle, the first Christian millionaire I will be teaching about on October 21st. Here are the words on the plaque: The historic plaque...

Carney - For Such a Time As This PM Mark Carney This is what the Lord says to His anointed, to Cyrus [king of Persia], whose right hand I have held; To subdue nations before him, and I will ungird the loins of kings [disarming them]; To open doors before him so that gates will not be shut: "I will go before you and level the mountains; I will shatter the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron. I will give you the treasures of darkness [the hoarded treasures] and the hidden riches of...

Failure of the Not-So-Free-Trade Talks With the US I want to warn you... This is a very long email. But you will be glad you read it because you will learn that US / Canada trade negotiations and relationships have always been difficult since the 1850s, and the arguments are similar every time. Some people point to a losing battle in this trade war and predict a recession because of our low Gross Domestic Product (the total dollar amount of goods and services we produce divided by the...
