With Eyes Wide Shut - Our Changing History

Sons of Issachar

Do you know anything about the 'Sons of Issachar '?

1 Chronicles 12:32 recounts the people who came to Hebron to crown David as King. From the tribe of Issachar, 200 chiefs came. They were described as 'men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do.'

In Esther Chapter 1, the king consulted with 'wise men who knew the times.' He conferred with 'experts in law and justice.'

I am not sure what to make of some of the changes happening in Canadian history before our very eyes. For what it is worth, Canada will never be the same after 2026.

Let me list some monumental changes in attitudes, perspectives, and provincial and international relations.

The Mixed Blessing

Some historians credit pivotal historical Canadian events with 'becoming a nation'. Some think that the War of 1812 was the 'birth' of a unified nation, when English, French and Natives fought a common enemy.

Some say WWI, when Canadian soldiers debuted on the world stage as a force to be reckoned with in Europe, marked the birth of a proud Canadian Nation.

But 2026 saw many events that would go down in Canadian history as historic, contributing to nation-building and national pride.

  1. Economic War with the USA

President Trump's tariff war and his rhetoric about Canada becoming the 51st US state sparked widespread Canadian revulsion, resulting in 'boycott-anger'. Suddenly, Canadian pride blossomed nationwide.

2. Inter-Provincial trade

A nation-building exercise that other federal governments should have tackled long ago fell to a Liberal government. Never mind that it was a reactionary policy brought on by the tariff wars.

3. Alberta referendum question

The Alberta government allowed its citizens to vote on whether to hold a referendum on leaving Canada to form its own country. An overwhelming majority (over 75%) voted to stay in Canada.

4. The reversal of the decision by the Liberal Government to disallow Alberta's right to build new pipelines to get their oil to new Asian markets. This was partly a reaction to the tariff war.

5. The fall of BC's NDP government

The previous Premier, David Eby, gambled on calling a snap election because his strongest opponents, the Conservatives, were in disarray. The party suffered two leadership changes and was squabbling. A little-known contender, Lorne Doerksen, won the Premiership.

6. The First Ministers-First Nations Meeting

For the first time in over 100 years, the Federal and Provincial governments met to begin consultation on moving beyond fractious relations with First Nations from coast to coast.

Many Native Chiefs were encouraged by this event because, for the first time in over 100 years, two levels of government heard specific complaints from different tribes across the country, from the East Coast to the West Coast. A conversation has begun. Good proposals were forthcoming; walls seem to be coming down, and plans were made to continue the conversation, probably annually.

Despite the seemingly positive things Mr Carney and his Liberal government have accomplished, they have also instituted some negative policies and positions.

To make the point, I will use MP Andrew Lawton's reporting on his FB account. He keeps constituents updated with some speeches in the House of Commons and his contributions at committee meetings.
