Over the last three years, I have been learning about Toronto's Christian millionaires. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Sherbourne Street Methodist Church in Toronto was known as 'The Millionaires' Church'. This was because many wealthy businessmen were members. I'm just starting to do a deep dive into this research, and I'm blown away by what I've discovered. The most interesting perspective I have found is that, for the most part, the desire to be millionaires was not their primary goal. They were Christians first, Methodists second, servants of the Church and community third, and millionaires last. Many share the same or similar 'rags-to-riches' stories; they came from Peterborough, where they were derisively known as 'the Methodist Mafia'. In Peterborough, they also served in the Methodist Church and the community by helping to establish healthcare and other social institutions. They moved to Toronto, where they drove innovation and established many societal institutions. On October 21st, our next Lunch N' Learn #9 session is about the 'rags-to-riches' story of Sir Joseph Wesley Flavelle, owner of a meat-packing business that morphed into today's Maple Leaf Canada. When he established his first business, he designed a plaque for his office that read, 'Not Slothful in Business, Fervent in Spirit, Serving the Lord - Romans 12:11.' On November 18th, our Lunch N' Learn #10 session is about Senator George Albertus Cox. Get on the Waitlist for that session. The story continues with another rags-to-riches story of Senator George Albertus Cox. He was a devout Methodist from Peterborough, a serial entrepreneur, politician, financier and philanthropist. His legacy lives on in the Canada Life Building near University Avenue in Toronto. In January 2027, we will look at many Masseys. They have left legacies such as world-renowned farm machinery innovation (Massey Ferguson farm equipment), Toronto Music Hall (Massey Hall) and even a Governor General (Vincent Massey).
