Weekend Wrap-Up: Compromise, Swag, Tours et al

Published about 2 months ago • 3 min read

Let me paint a picture for you.

It is 1608. You are a Protestant living in the wilderness. No electricity. No insulated walls. No indoor plumbing. No heat-source but a fireplace. You get 1 year's groceries and necessities every spring.

Your mission? Get to know the locals. Trade with them. Evangelize. And look for a sea-route to China and India. Oh... and there are no airplanes yet.

By 1610, your hopes for the mission to be accomplished are dashed because the Protestant one who enabled your Protestant benefactor has been assassinated.

Your benefactor helps you to marry into influential Protestant circles. He, and they, keep you and the people living in your household, supplied for the next 12 years but relentless efforts are made by competitors with a different vision than you both have. They want to usurp your influence and take control of the work which you have been building from the ground up for 12 years.

5 years later, you get everything you ever wanted (or almost) but you MUST agree to keep those pesky Protestants from settling in the area. No Protestants. Only Catholics allowed.

Would you compromise your beliefs?

This then, is the story of Samuel de Champlain in Module 6 Lessons 3 & 4 of The French Connection. Click here to download the timeline of the events of his life. An article about him should be on our website soon.

Places You Will Go & People You Will Learn About...

One of the places you will visit is The West Block & The House of Commons.

West Block

https://www.ourcommons.ca/About/BuildingTheFuture/index-e.html

The West Block is one of Canada’s most significant heritage buildings. Designed in the High Victorian Gothic Revival style, the building was opened in 1865 and initially housed the various government departments of the Province of Canada.

On your tour, you will also learn about JR Booth (a Methodist lumber baron) who clinched the contract to supply ALL the lumber for ALL the Parliament buildings. Our article about him states:

"In a few short years, JR Booth had become so successful in the lumber industry that in 1859, he successfully won the bid to supply the lumber to build the Parliament Buildings. Just the year before, Ottawa was chosen by Queen Victoria as the capital of Canada".

J.R. Booth

And if you are planning a trip in June, you will be staying in his historic mansion, which is currently the Ottawa Campus of Trinity Western University (Laurentian Leadership Centre - LLC). You will even have an information session by the current Executive Director of the LLC.
