Road to Ottawa: Astounding Ignorance... Thomas McKay

Come to Ottawa With me!!

Over the next few weeks, I will introduce the stories of remarkable Christians who left indelible marks on our history, with the SAME introduction because it is important to hear.

So if you have read it before, just skip to the highlighted story... Today, it's about Thomas McKay

WHY should you go to Ottawa with me?

Apart from the fun and fellowship you will have, you will learn about the Christians who helped to lay the foundations of Ottawa and Canada.

WHY is that important?

Today, Christians in Canada are marginalized. The legacy of past Christian contributors to Canada are minimized or erased.

Facts helps to refute allegations that the Europeans we will learn about were greedy colonists who settled Canada caring only about making money.

Let Me Ask You...

How many magnificent structures built by Christians in Ottawa, or Montreal can you identify?

What occupations did these Christians hold? How did they leave enduring marks on our history?

Come with me to Ottawa.

Learn the names of Christians who constructed buildings, made rivers navigable and started industries and organizations (in Ottawa AND Montreal), which are still around today in some modified fashion... even though they were built in the early 1800s.

Some of these buildings and organizations include: the Bytown Museum, The Parliament Buildings, the Ottawa Locks, The Governor General’s House, the first railway in Ottawa, The St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Queen's University, The St. Luke’s Hospital, Carleton University and the Peace Tower (with the 25 Scripture verses).

This list barely scratches the surface of the influence of Christians who developed industries to help Ottawa and Canada thrive from the early 1800s to today.

Do you know anyone who has taken the time to research this information, put it in booklet form, and who will traipse around Ottawa in their old age, JUST to share it with you and the next generation?

I do.

ME!

You will:

  • be inspired
  • want to return again and again to refresh your memory with the facts
  • want to bring others along with you too

The Astounding Ignorance about Thomas McKay

If you were to read about Thomas McKay on our website, you will read this quote:

“The extraordinary success of his ventures [is] a striking proof of what may be done in Canada by an enterprising man who applies himself diligently to his task. If he became a rich man, it was not by chance, but by dint of hard work intelligently pursued. It is by such men that empires are built.”

What were the ordinary success of his ventures? The list is long, but I will list for you, my Top 7 Accomplishments

  • Bytown Museum - the longest standing building in Ottawa. Built without nails.
  • The first eight locks of the Rideau Canal system, built with help from John Redpath - of granulated sugar fame, who also built Montreal's Lachine Canal with McKay.
  • Built his 'mansion' which became the current Governors General home.
  • Built St. Andrews Presbyterian Church to avoid his men becoming 'bored' while building the canal.
  • Built Ottawa's first railway
  • Was one of the founding trustees of Queen's College (now Queen's University)
  • He not only developed an entire village (New Edinburgh) but populated it with folks from 'back home', and possibly employed them all in his many mills on the east tributary of the Rideau River. The mills included lumber, grist and cloth.

Thomas McKay was a hard-working Christian, a Presbyterian from Scotland, whose footprints left deep imprints in our nation's capital - Ottawa. This is another incident of Christian history... hidden in plain sight.
