Righteousness Exalts a Nation

How Canada Began

From now until July 1st, Dominion Day, I will be showing you snippets of our constitution - The BNA Act. You can read it yourself here.

Many Canadians, old and new, do not know how our nation began. There was no Manitoba, or Saskatchewan, or Alberta. Our country consisted of settlements along the St. Lawrence River and around four of the five Great Lakes.

The British Act that created Canada was called the British North American Act. That is because British North America consisted of the provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island (PEI), Newfoundland, Labrador, Rupert's Land, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories.

The BNA Act

The BNA Act was the codifying instrument used to formalize the legislative and foundational systems to govern the new nation called the Dominion of Canada.

Let's look at the salient parts of the Act, in small installments, to bring clarity to various issues that have raised their heads in Canada. Hopefully, we shall understand what was, what changed, and what now is.

----------------------------------------

II. — Union 3. It shall be lawful for the Queen, by and with the Advice of Her Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council, to declare by Proclamation that, on and after a Day therein appointed, not being more than Six Months after the passing of this Act, the Provinces of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick shall form and be One Dominion under the Name of Canada; and on and after that Day those Three Provinces shall form and be One Dominion under that Name accordingly.

  1. The subsequent Provisions of this Act shall, unless it is otherwise expressed or implied, commence and have effect on and after the Union, that is to say, on and after the Day appointed for the Union taking effect in the Queen’s Proclamation; and in the same Provisions, unless it is otherwise expressed or implied, the Name Canada shall be taken to mean Canada as constituted under this Act.
  2. The Parts of the Province of Canada (as it exists at the passing of this Act) which formerly constituted respectively the Provinces of Upper Canada and Lower Canada shall be deemed to be severed, and shall form Two separate Provinces. The Part which formerly constituted the Province of Upper Canada shall constitute the Province of Ontario; and the Part which formerly constituted the Province of Lower Canada shall constitute the Province of Quebec.
  3. The Provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick shall have the same Limits as at the passing of this Act.

It is my hope and prayer, that we would understand the sincere and original intent of our Fathers of Confederation. They spent many weeks in Charlottetown, Quebec City and London, formalizing every aspect of what our country should look like for generations to come. Sir John A Macdonald, singlehandedly, wrote over 70% of our constitution (the BNA Act).

National Day of Prayer (Canada)

For over two decades our sister in Christ, Faytene Grasseschi, has been calling this nation to prayer. It all began decades ago with an assembly on Parliament Hill held every July, called 'The Cry'. It has grown into a National Day of Prayer over 3 days from July 9-11, 2026.

If you follow the links on the website, you will find events that prepare your heart for the final day when you can join the March for Jesus Ottawa. You will march around the city with other Christians who will be worshipping God all the way.

The website is appropriately named, 4MyCanada. Faytene has been working relentlessly to bring us updates on the anti-Christian debates happening in the House of Commons.

ChristianRoots Canada has found areas of common beliefs and interests in the pursuit of Kingdom advancement with the National Day of Prayer. Many 24-7 prayer groups across Canada, including those led by 4MyCanada, have been using our books, Our Biblical Legacy on Parliament Hill, and The Legacy of 25 Scripture Verses on Parliament Hill, to guide their prayers for Canada. I have received many phone calls from coast to coast, thanking me for the information in these books.

In case the National Day of Prayer is something that interests you, I will be reminding you intermittently about this event, so that you can sign up to attend.

National Day of Prayer (USA)

Since my trip to Ottawa, I have been receiving regular updates from Well Versed. This is an American organization whose motto is, 'Bringing Biblical principles of Governance to political leaders, and the people who elect them.'

I have been interviewed by the founder, Jim Garlow, about my book, The Legacy of 25 Scripture Verses on Parliament Hill. That interview airs on Canada Day (July 1st), 2026.

Their recent email showcases an event that almost mimics the national response of Ninevah after hearing Jonah's prophecy. - A day of prayer and repentance to take place on May 17th. Here is their ad for it.
