The Road To Ottawa

In the previous Broadcasts, you have heard various stories about...

The boy who landed barefoot and penniless in Quebec, walked to Montreal, started a construction company, and built the Lachine Canal in Montreal with his Scottish stonemason friend.

He next built a sugar factory and imported raw sugar from the islands so you can buy refined, granulated, Redpath sugar, off the grocery shelves today (John Redpath).

--------------------------------------------

... and the boy who, also a stonemason, helped to build the Lachine Canal and came to Ottawa (Bytown), built the longest-standing building in Ottawa (without ONE NAIL), blasted the rocks from the banks of the Rideau Locks and used them to build the locks and the Bytown Museum.

He built John By's house, the Governor General's house (which was his mansion at first) and the St Andrews Presbyterian Church at the corner of Kent and Wellington Streets.

He also built the first railway in Ottawa and was one of the signatories to the Charter from Queen Victoria to establish Queen's University (Thomas McKay)

-----------------------------------------------

... or the young man who provided all of the lumber for building the Parliament Buildings and had the largest timber license in the Ottawa Valley.

He also built the exquisite Library of Parliament and supplied most of the lumber for the Cunard lines which built the Titanic.

He invested in the St. Luke's Hospital (now the Civic Hospital) with the other churches in Ottawa, provided adult education for his workers (The Mechanics Institute) during the long dark winters in the lumber camps, and even continued to pay his workers' wages when his business experienced losses due to fire (John Booth).

--------------------------------------------

... and the young Scottish-born architect who fought in WWI, got the contract to design and rebuild the Centre Block which was destroyed by fire in 1916 and built the Peace Tower as 'The Tower of Peace and Victory' as a memorial to the men who died in WWI.

He engraved 25 Scripture verses on stone, brass and glass which tells the the story of Christ's death, resurrection and eternal life.

He paid attention to every last detail of the design of EVERY room and every piece of furniture.

He even built a communion table, still in use today at the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Toronto, with similar verses from the Altar of Remembrance in the Peace Tower (John A. Pearson).

---------------------------------------------

You will soon hear about the Bronson Family...

Henry Franklin Bronson helped to establish the Ottawa Ladies College which existed for 73 years before becoming Carleton University.

His son, Erskine Bronson, diversified the family's lucrative lumber business by investing in the FIRST Hydroelectric generating station at the Chaudiere Falls in 1891 (Generating Station #2), which still stands today and eventually became Hydro Ottawa.

He also served in Provincial politics as an MPP under Sir Oliver Mowatt, one of the Christian Fathers of Confederation.

-------------------------------------------

You will also hear about Colonel John By - the military engineer who held the ultimate responsibility for the construction of the Rideau Canal Locks.

In the article on our website, you will read this: "Construction of the Canal began in 1826 and was completed in 1831. When finished, it consisted of 47 locks on a 125 mile waterway. Jones Falls – the highest lock, stands at 58.4 feet high".

These men were Christians who left HUGE legacies in Ottawa.

THIS THEN, is the Ottawa Tour that you will experience...

  • The Supreme Court
  • The Bytown Museum and The Locks
  • The Governor General's house (Rideau Hall)

and museums such as...

More stories to come on the weekend...

You need to hear the stories of the persecution of our fathers of the faith in France before they established settlements here in Acadia (NS, NB, PEI) and New France (QUE & ON).

You will not believe how eerily similar the persecution of the Protestants in France in the 1500s and 1600s compare with the gradual persecution of Christians in Canada today.

Learning from History, I am convinced that when Christians share the truth of the gospel, the power brokers feel more accused by the power of the Holy Spirit than excused.

The power brokers back then belonged to the apostate Church.

The power brokers today belong to the Liberal Government.

The modus operandi is the same (

You can learn the stories in our Fast Track Summer Program.

In the meantime, Take The Quiz...

See how much you know about where we came from and what issues shaped our nation.

I look forward to sharing these stories with you. And don't forget to share this information with a friend who needs to hear these stories.
