Lion or Lamb? / Global Warming in 1540s

Lion or Lamb?

There are some things which seem to hold true for Canada for the last 30+ years. These were observations made in the early days of being an immigrant while living in Ottawa - where the snow often flies from October to March.

For example, it usually snowed in Ottawa by the middle of November; in the middle of February there is a dumping of snow just around Valentines Day... either a few days before, the day of, or a few days after.

Interestingly, it is not quite the same in Southern Ontario where the climate is mild compared to Ottawa's extreme.

And so, in the next few days I will be looking to see if March comes in like a lamb or a lion. The saying is, 'When March comes in like a lion, she goes out like a lamb'. If March comes in with terrible weather, it will go out with fair weather & sunshine and vice versa. That was more observable in Ottawa.

Did You Know... that on Cartier's three trips to New France (in the 1540s), he got stuck in snow and ice EVERY TIME, from October to March?

Did you know that over 50 years later, THE SAME THING happened to Du Gua and Champlain?

They built the first settlement at Croix Island (now in Maine) before they moved across the Bay of Fundy to Annapolis Royal... and they got stuck in the early snows.

So much for Global Warming eh? And the Carbon Tax.
