Behold Christ... In The Peace Tower

The Peace Tower & Christ's death, Resurrection and His Return to Earth.

Look at the picture of the South Window below... And if you have one of our books, 'The Legacy of 25 Scripture Verses on Parliament Hill', you can flip to the page which talks about the South Window.

These images and Scripture verses will amaze you. The first time I realized what I was seeing, I was moved to tears.

There are two more images which point to Resurrection Hope; the South wall of the Memorial Chamber on which there is a carved image of The Recording Angel and the East Stained Glass Window there is a Scripture verse from Revelation.

The South Stained Glass Window

There are four symbolic figures in the first row - Michael the Archangel, George slaying the dragon, the figure of Justice, and a figure representing Joan of Arc.

We will examine what the Scriptures say about Michael the Archangel and the symbolism and meaning of the figure of Justice.

First, Michael the Archangel

At the time of writing our book, The Legacy of 25 Scripture Verses on Parliament Hill, the government of Canada's website informed us that Michal's trumpet signified 'a call to battle in the cause of righteousness'.

You can see the figure of Michael the Archangel bearing a sword and a trumpet. Under his feet one can read the words of Nahum 1:7- The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble.

The rest of that verse says: He knows those who take refuge in Him.

The role of Michael the Archangel in Scripture.

According to Scripture, Michael’s job is judgment. He is God’s avenging warrior-angel who is engaged in SPIRITUAL combat.

In other words, on the day of God's judgment when Michael's trumpet summons the armies of heaven to judge those still living and the risen dead, God will protect His people from eternal death because they take refuge in Him. He knows who they are.

How different it will be on that Day of Judgment.

Michael is the leader of God’s army of warrior-angels See Daniel 10:13-15; Daniel 10:19-21; Daniel 12:1; Revelation 12:7-8.

Next, The Figure of Justice

At the time of writing our book, The Legacy of 25 Scripture Verses on Parliament Hill, this figure in the South Window symbolized JUSTICE.

He bears the 'scales of justice' balanced on his sword.

Notice the figure of the crucified Christ on the cross, and a green ribbon with the word RETRIBUTIONEM (Retribution) above his head.

What the Bible says about these symbols:

  • The Scales of Justice - You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting (Daniel 5:27). This Scripture verse comes from the experience of the wicked king Belshazzar who used God's holy drinking vessels as common. He was judged instantly.
  • The Crucified Christ on the Sword of Justice - But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness (Hebrews 9:22).
  • The word RETRIBUTIONEM (Retribution) - According to Webster’s dictionary, Retribution is the dispensing or receiving of reward or punishment especially in the hereafter.
  • Scripture says, For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead (Acts 17:31).

Symbolism of the Recording Angel

This can also be seen on the south wall on the inside of the Peace Tower, over the doorway. The explanation given for the Recording Angel, in the Memorial Chamber, is that she is recording the names of those who sacrificed their lives for their country.

Some Scripture verses about God's Book of Life include...

  • The Lord replied to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out of my book (Exodus 32:33).
  • Nothing impure will ever enter it (God's temple), nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life (Rev.21-27).

There are many other Scriptures about God's Book of Life - Daniel 12:1; Malachi 3:16; Luke 10:20; Philippians 4:3; Rev. 3:1-6; Rev. 13:8; Rev 17:8; Rev. 20:11-15.

The East Window

One of four Scripture verses in the East Window says, 'Faithful Unto Death'. The government's website quotes it as 'Faith unto death', with no reference to the location of the Scripture text.

This verse, quoted in its entirety reads: Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life (Revelation 2:10).

Even though John A Pearson carefully chose all the Scripture verses that went into the Peace Tower almost 100 years ago, it is quite easy to forget they are there. It is easy to neglect 'telling the next generation'.

The concrete arch of the External South Window displays the Scripture verse from a Psalm which points to the Messiah: Psalm 72:1 - Give the King Thy JUDGEMENT O God, and your RIGHTEOUSNESS unto the King's Son.

The theme of Judgement and Righteousness is shouted out loudly to Canada in the South Windows of the Peace Tower... from Psalm 72:1 on the outside to the many other Scripture verses on the inside.

  • Michael the Archangel's trumpet and sword,
  • Justice's scales, sword and the crucified Christ
  • the promise of reward and punishment (RETRIBUTIONEM)
  • the recording of our names in the Book of Life
  • the promise in the East Stained Glass Window to receive a crown of life IF we are faithful.

May you ponder Christ and his passion afresh this Easter! Meditate on the great salvation of our God. And point to the story of Easter in the Peace Tower.

Have a HAPPY Easter Celebration...
